Private world studies (éveil) lessons in primary school
Science, history, geography: a coach helps your child understand their world studies lessons, read a document and study with a method, at home anywhere in Belgium or online.
Your child is struggling with world studies: where to start?
In French-speaking schools, world studies are called « éveil »: they cover science, history and geography. It is often the subject where your child has to read the most: a text about volcanoes, a map, a timeline, a table of measurements.
When a child gets stuck in world studies, the cause often lies beyond the subject. Some children read too slowly to follow a document. Others understand in class but do not know how to study a lesson. Others again get lost in the vocabulary: century, relief, climate, energy.
The coach starts from the current lesson and your child’s exercise book. They help your child spot what matters, say it in their own words and remember it, then check that your child can use it on a new document.

What world studies cover in primary school
World studies bring together three areas, taught from year 1 to year 6 of primary school. The coach follows the class curriculum and your child’s actual level.
Science
Observing, making a hypothesis, carrying out a simple experiment and drawing a conclusion. Living things, the human body, matter and energy, with diagrams and tables to read.
History
Finding one’s way in time: timeline, centuries, major periods. Reading a trace of the past (picture, text, object) and drawing information from it.
Geography
Reading a map, its key and its scale, finding one’s bearings, placing Belgium in Europe and in the world. Understanding relief, climate and the way people live in an area.
World studies in the CEB: how to prepare?
The CEB, the external exam at the end of year 6 in French-speaking schools, tests world studies in two parts: science (éveil scientifique), and history and geography (éveil historique et géographique). The questions are based on documents (maps, graphs, texts, diagrams) that your child has to read and compare.
From June 2027, pupils need at least 50% in each subject tested and an overall average of at least 60%. World studies therefore need the same preparation as French and maths.
The coach trains your child on past CEB papers : reading the whole instruction, finding the right document, justifying the answer. For everything else about the exam, read our guide to preparing your child for the CEB.

A world studies tutor, chosen for your child
Private tutor, home teacher, coach: at My Sherpa, your educational advisor makes this choice with you. They assess where your child is stuck in world studies, then select a coach who is at ease with children of that age.
In world studies, the coach above all teaches your child how to study: making a summary sheet, asking themselves questions, reciting without looking. A method your child will then use in every subject.
Lessons take place at home anywhere in Belgium, or online, on weekdays and at weekends. At this level, a session usually lasts 1.5 hours.
World studies lessons in primary school: your questions
« Éveil » is the world studies subject of French-speaking schools: it covers science (éveil scientifique) as well as history and geography (éveil historique et géographique). It is taught from year 1 to year 6 of primary school and is one of the subjects tested in the CEB.
Often because the test asks pupils to use the lesson rather than recite it: read a map, interpret a graph, explain an experiment. The coach trains your child to apply what they know to a document they have never seen.
By first going back over the missing notions, then practising on past CEB papers. The coach teaches your child to read the whole instruction and look for the information in the right document. Our guide to preparing your child for the CEB gives the dates and a revision schedule.
Lessons start at €35/h in primary school, usually for 1.5-hour sessions. The first three sessions are a trial period: if it doesn’t click with the coach, you continue with another one at no extra cost.
Ask your child to explain the lesson back to you in their own words, without looking at the exercise book: whatever they cannot repeat is what they need to review. Also have them redraw a diagram or fill in a blank map, which is often what the test asks for.
