Private French lessons in primary school
Reading with ease, writing with fewer mistakes, understanding instructions: a French coach who goes back over the basics with your child, at home anywhere in Belgium or online.
Your child is struggling with French: where to start?
In primary school, French underpins every other subject. A child who reads slowly struggles to understand instructions in maths or general studies, and their results drop across the board.
The difficulties do not all have the same cause. Some children still decode word by word. Others read well but write with many mistakes. Others again express themselves easily out loud but cannot organise a piece of writing.
The coach first has your child read and write, to see where they get stuck. They then start from what is done in class: the current reading book, spelling rules, conjugations, the writing task set by the teacher.
If dyslexia or dysorthographia has been diagnosed, we choose a coach who is used to this profile. To find out more: dyslexia and written expression disorders.

What your child works on in French, year by year
Expectations change a lot between Year 1 and Year 6 of primary school. The coach follows the class curriculum and your child’s actual level.
Years 1 and 2
Learning to read: matching sounds and letters, reading simple sentences aloud. Writing first words and first sentences that follow the sounds.
Years 3 and 4
Reading fluently to understand what you read. The first spelling rules (agreement, homophones), conjugation of simple tenses, a short text that hangs together.
Years 5 and 6
Understanding longer texts and multi-step instructions, analysing sentences, writing a structured text. In Year 6, the CEB assesses reading and writing in particular.

A private French tutor, chosen for your child
Private tutor, home French teacher, coach: at My Sherpa, your educational advisor makes that choice with you. They assess where reading or writing is getting stuck, then select a coach who is at ease with children of that age.
Lessons take place at home anywhere in Belgium, or online, on weekdays and at weekends. At this level, a session usually lasts 1h30.
Is your child in Year 6? The CEB papers from previous years are the best practice, and their coach can work through them with them.

French lessons in primary school: your questions
From Year 1, if learning to read is not happening. After that, the right moment is when a foundation is missing while the next step builds on it: fluent reading in Year 3, agreement and conjugation in Years 4 and 5. Caught early, the gap covers little material.
Because knowing a rule and applying it while writing are two different things. In a dictation or a composition, the child is thinking about what they are saying and has no attention left for spelling. The coach trains them to reread their text with a method, one rule at a time, until it becomes a reflex.
The CEB, at the end of Year 6, assesses skills built up over several years. Preparation therefore starts with the basics that are still missing, in reading as in writing, then moves on to practising on papers from previous years.
Lessons start at €35/h in primary school, usually for 1h30 sessions. The first three sessions are a trial period: if things do not click with the coach, you continue with another one, at no extra cost.
Yes. If dyslexia or dysorthographia has been diagnosed, your educational advisor chooses a coach who is used to this profile. The speech therapist treats the disorder; the coach helps your child keep up with the class curriculum, with adapted materials. To find out more: dyslexia.
