Our maths lessons for primary school

In primary school, maths lays the foundations for much of what comes later. When a concept is not properly understood (times tables, fractions, measurements, word problems or geometry), difficulties can quickly build up and discourage the child.

At My Sherpa, we offer support tailored to each pupil's level, pace and personality. The coach goes back over what was covered in class, identifies the sticking points and helps the child develop a clear method to understand, practise and become more independent.

The goal: better results and renewed confidence in maths for your child.

Support adapted to learning disorders

ADHD, dyslexia, dyscalculia, autism (ASD), dysorthographia, dysphasia… Some children need a different way of explaining, organising and learning. These difficulties can affect their confidence, motivation and independence with schoolwork. My Sherpa takes the time to understand your child's profile and needs in order to select a suitable coach. The coach adjusts their pace, explanations and methods to help your child progress, develop concrete strategies and regain confidence in their abilities.

Primary school maths lessons: your questions

There is no set starting year. What matters is the moment a concept is no longer mastered while the next one builds on it: times tables in 3rd year, fractions and decimals in 5th year, measurements and geometry in 6th year. Tackled at that moment, the concept can be caught up in a few sessions; left aside, it comes back every year, a little further on.

Because a word problem requires two separate things: reading the question to work out which operation is needed, then setting it out. A child who calculates quickly can still struggle with the first step. The coach therefore works on reading the question (what we are looking for, what we know, what is missing), since the arithmetic is already there.

Private lessons start at €35/hour in primary school. At this level, a session usually lasts 1.5 hours. The first three sessions serve as a trial period: if things do not click with the coach, you continue with another one at no extra cost.

No. The CEB assesses skills built up over several years, well before the months leading up to it: in June of 6th year, it is too late to establish a method. Work started earlier focuses on the concepts themselves; started at the end of primary school, it can only be revision.

Vibeke was a fantastic coach for our son Julian. She listened carefully to our needs and found a way to get him to learn Dutch in a very smart and practical way, and importantly in a way which he greatly enjoyed. He now associates learning Dutch with a very positive experience and is keen to learn more. Many thanks Vibeke!

It was great the way the lessons transferred easily online with the confinement of this period. Alexia was very professional, adaptable, and the time was well-used.

Our coach was excellent. He is experienced and showed great dedication and concern for my kid. He always prepared his lectures and was very careful with the objectives. I would like to have him again for French lessons for my child next year.
