Private mathematics lessons
The subject where pupils fall behind fastest, and the one where one-to-one support shows results most quickly.
Filling gaps, understanding the reasoning, regaining confidence
Mathematics is the most cumulative subject in the curriculum. Fractions poorly digested in primary school come back as equations in the 3rd year of secondary school, then as derivatives in the final year. That is why a pupil can work hard and still fall behind: they are stacking new material on a foundation that does not hold.
So a coach almost always starts by going back down: finding the level where the reasoning breaks, fixing it, then climbing back up. It is often lower than the pupil thought, and that is exactly why rereading the lesson was not working.
With their coach, the pupil works again on arithmetic and fractions, geometry, equations and functions, then trigonometry, calculus and statistics, from primary school to the first years of higher education.
What we work on in maths, at each level
Maths are built level by level: here is what is at stake at each stage.
In primary school
Times tables, the four operations, fractions, quantities and measurements, reading a word problem. Then preparation for the CEB in the 6th year.
In secondary school
In the first two years, algebra, equations and geometry, up to the CE1D. Then functions, quadratics, trigonometry and statistics, followed by calculus (derivatives, integrals) and probability in the final year.
In higher education
Calculus, linear algebra and statistics in the first years of a bachelor's degree, preparation for the January, June and August exam sessions, and the entrance exam for medicine or civil engineering.

Maths lessons: your questions
Because understanding a proof done by someone else and being able to redo it alone are two different skills. In maths, this is the most common gap: the lesson seems clear, then the page stays blank. The work then focuses on producing answers, not on rereading.
When the pupil can no longer say what they do not understand. As long as they can identify the step that blocks them, the delay is local and quickly made up. When the answer becomes “I don't understand anything”, several concepts have piled up and you need to go back down to find them.
Yes, from arithmetic in primary school to calculus and linear algebra in higher education. The coach is chosen according to the level required: a primary school coach and a first-year university coach do not do the same job.
