Free French A2 test

Want to know if you have an A2 level in French? Answer the 10 questions below, then see your result. The test is corrected straight away, with no sign-up.

A2 is the second of the six levels of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR). At this level, you understand simple sentences from everyday life: a timetable, an announcement, a short message, an invitation. That is what this test assesses.

In Belgium, an A2 level in one of the three national languages is one of the conditions for applying for nationality. This test is a self-assessment: it gives you an idea of your level, but it does not replace the official proof required (diploma, certificate or recognised test). Ask your municipality which documents are accepted.

The test: 10 questions

For each situation, choose the answer that fits best. Questions and answers are in French. One question at a time, corrected straight away.

Question 1 of 10

The question asks what to do until the train leaves: « aller manger » (go and eat) answers it.

« Sur présentation de ce bon » (on presentation of this voucher): it is an offer to attract customers, so an advert (« une publicité »).

Quand penses-tu arriver ?

« Quand » (when) asks for a time: the only answer that gives a time is « Vers 10 h ».

» (will you come alone?) is about people: you answer by saying who is coming with you.

The person asks for Saturday opening hours: the answer must give times, and not Tuesday's.

The question asks for the pupils' age, not yours or how many there are: « des élèves de 12 ans ».

« En fin d’après-midi » (late afternoon): 4 pm fits; 12.30 pm and 10 am are not late afternoon.

The question asks which other languages you speak: « Je parle également néerlandais » answers it. « Non, ma langue maternelle est l’espagnol » contradicts itself (no, then another language).

The question asks whether you can order without waiting for Elie: « Commandons un thé pour patienter » answers yes.

« Combien vous serez » (how many of you there will be) asks for a number of people: 4.

You probably have an A2 level in understanding. In an official test, speaking and writing count too: practise introducing yourself, telling a story and writing a short message.
